  • Abstract
The use of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) equipped with thermal sensors has been consolidating as a promising approach for monitoring endothermic animals, particularly in environments with difficult access and high structural complexity. The present study integrated: (i) a scientometric mapping of the scientific production on the application of thermal cameras mounted on UAVs for wildlife monitoring; (ii) an evaluation of the potential of Multimodal Large Language Models (MLLMs) for the automated detection and counting of primates in thermal images; and (iii) an analysis of the influence of flight altitude and vegetation structure on thermal contrast and, consequently, on target detectability. The scientometric analysis, based on articles retrieved from the Web of Science and Scopus databases, resulted in a final dataset of 149 publications on the topic. A marked increase in research output was observed from 2019 onwards, predominantly from the United States and Australia, accompanied by a transition from approaches based exclusively on visual detection and free-flight surveys to methods that integrate algorithms, artificial intelligence, and preplanned flight missions. In the applied component, even with a limited number of training examples, the MLLM was able to correctly identify individuals in the test images. Furthermore, an inverse relationship was observed between flight altitude and thermal contrast, with a more pronounced reduction in forested environments, where the canopy acts as a barrier to infrared radiation. At 90 m altitude, targets located under a closed canopy became indistinguishable from the thermal background, highlighting the combined influence of flight altitude and vegetation structure on detection probability
