ResumoPalavras-chave:
permanece fixa no tempo.
Nessa
abordagem, o modelo volumétrico permanece contemporâneo, enquanto a
atualização temporal ocorre explicitamente sobre as métricas estruturais derivadas do
LiDAR.
A metodologia

AbstractKeywords:
The use of active remote sensing data has become established as a strategic
alternative for large-scale forest inventory, particularly in fast-growing forest
plantations. However, the operational application of structural metrics derived from
airborne surveys is still limited by the temporal mismatch between LiDAR data
acquisition and the target date of volumetric estimates, which may introduce
systematic bias into forest prognosis. In this context, the present study aimed to
develop and validate a methodological approach for the estimation and prognosis of
Total Volume with Bark (TVWB) in eucalyptus stands by integrating three-dimensional
structural metrics, forest management variables, and machine learning techniques.
Initially, a predictive model based on the Random Forest algorithm was calibrated
under the Area-Based Approach (ABA), using metrics derived from the LiDAR point
cloud together with auxiliary silvicultural information. Subsequently, the effect of
temporal lag on the relationship between canopy structure and forest volume was
investigated, demonstrating that isolated age variation may induce apparent volumetric
increments when canopy structure remains temporally fixed. To address this effect, a
two-stage modeling framework was implemented, in which LiDAR structural metrics
are temporally projected using Random Forest models trained on longitudinal data
before being applied to the contemporary volumetric model. In this framework, the
volumetric model itself remains contemporary, while temporal updating occurs
explicitly on the structural metrics derived from LiDAR data. Results showed that,
although cumulative volumetric estimates presented similar magnitudes between
approaches, the explicit projection of structural metrics substantially altered the
temporal dynamics of forest increments, providing greater biological consistency to the
estimates. The proposed methodology proved effective in reducing bias associated
with temporal mismatch and enabled volumetric prognosis under operational
conditions, contributing to the improvement of precision forest inventory systems.
