  • Abstract
Forest degradation alters the structure of stands, microenvironmental conditions, and the ecological processes that regulate the dynamics of tropical forests. In Amazonian fragments subjected to anthropogenic disturbances, the opening of clearings, variation in canopy structure, and competition between trees can directly influence the growth and mortality of individuals. In this context, models at the level of individual trees are important tools to understand forest dynamics, as they allow the incorporation of dendrometric, structural, and competitive characteristics of each tree. The study was carried out at Fazenda Cristalina, in São Domingos do Araguaia (PA), in 13 permanent plots of 1 ha, distributed in four treatments: Intermediate Canopy with clearing (DI-cl – 4 ha), Intermediate Canopy without clearing (DI-s/cl – 4 ha), Low Canopy with clearing (DB-cl – 4 ha) and Low Canopy without clearing (DB-s/cl – 1 ha). Data from forest inventory carried out in 2013, 2014, 2019, and 2023 were used, considering individuals with a diameter of 1.30 m from the ground (D) ≥ 20 cm. The work was divided into three chapters. In the first chapter, distance-independent competition indices were evaluated at the level of an individual tree, seeking to identify which best represent the competitive condition of trees in different structural conditions of the canopy and opening of clearings. In the second chapter, the probability of individual tree mortality was modeled, evaluating the effect of competition and the structural conditions of the environment. Mortality was analyzed as an essential process for community renewal, alteration of the stand structure, and redistribution of resources in the forest fragment. In the third chapter, models of growth in diameter for individual trees were evaluated, compared, and validated, considering dendrometric, structural, competitive variables, and the effect of treatments. Diametric growth was analyzed as an indicator of individual tree performance and forest recovery capacity. The models allowed to estimate the increase in tree diameter and to evaluate the influence of competition and structural conditions on growth. The results show that competition and canopy structural conditions influence the dynamics of individual trees in degraded Amazonian forests. The approach at the individual tree level contributed to integrate competition, mortality and growth, providing subsidies for the modeling, management, conservation and recovery of forest remnants in the Amazon
