AbstractKeywords:
The organic matter of the soil (OMS) is direct related to water retention capacity of the soil.
The peat and organic compounds are rich materials in OMS. The objective of this study was
to quantify the water retention capacity of humin (H) and humic acid (HA) of organic matter
(OM) of peat and of compost organic waste from the textile industry, pure and mixed with
sand. The separation of the fractions (humin, humic acid and fulvic acid) followed an
adaptation of the International Humic Substances methodology Society. The substrates were
obtained from the following proportions of humic substances (HS), from peat and compost,
with sand (fine and medium): 0% HS and 100% of fine sand (FS) and mean (MS); 100% HS
and 0% sand FS or MS; 75% HS and 25% FS and MS; 50% HS and 50% FS and MS; 25%
HS and 75% FS and MS. Using the extractor of Richards were determined levels of water
retained in tensions of 0 (MCWR), 10, 100, 300, 500, 700 kPa for all substrates. After the
determination of datas (water retention) was made the variance analysis. No statistical
differences were observed between substrates 100% FS and MS. Analyzing the difference in
water retention of the substrates 100% HA and H, and the differences source of HS (compost
and peat), we have found the highest retentions for substrates with HA and HS from the peat.
The humin is the substance that predominate in the peat and in the organic compost from
textile industry waste. The highest water retention in MCWR and in the tensions of 10, 100,
300, 500 and 700 kPa, were obtained by substrates with 100% HA when compared with
100% H. The substrates with different proportions of HA and sand had water retention similar
to the substrates with different proportions of H and sand. The substrate which had the highest
retention of water was 75% HS and 25% FS. The HA and H showed hydrophilicity and has
the potential to manufacture the organic hidrorretentor sustainable. By a modeling of the
water retention, water loss by substrates of H are much more evident in MCWR. For the
substrates of HA, the water loss with increasing of pressure applied become more evident in
the proportion of 75% HS, mainly in MCWR.
